Thème : The Cultural Clash in the Arab Anglophone Fiction : A Postcolonial Perspective
Présentation : The aim of this research project is to discuss the clash of civilization, through cultural challenges, in the Arab World. The focus is neither political nor sociological, but rather a literary perspective: t o see the way Arab Anglophone writers respond and react to such a challenge, in the arena of one global culture imposed by the logocentrism of Europe. The latter has become the only referent against which the Other judges, gauges and decides about the nature of his culture. The questions raised are: How do Arab Anglophone writers respond to logocentrism? What parameters and devices used to deal with the theme of culture? Do they fail or succeed to decentre the center and make their own culture the focus of their fictional construction? Do they have the same artistic and philosophical orientations? The project tackles this subject through a postcolonial perspective: reference to Edward said, Ashcroft, Michèl Foucault Homi Bhabha, and others. The project discusses these points through three essential Anglophone writers: Ahfed Soueif, Diana Abu Jaber, Leila Aboulela
