Résumé: Architectural stratigraphic survey inspired from Harris,Brogiolo et Francovich (1982) is a useful technique to studyhistorical buildings especially when there are layers to explore. Thisresearch illustrates its use by identifying the micro-history (Filippo,1994) hidden whether in a centimeter of Zellige or a simple scar ofmasonry in a historical complex in Algeria. What is unearthed couldhave been rarely found through the simple historical approaches orin the old documents. The technique can help the architects to findcues to develop future restoration projects.This research investigates the stratigraphy and the physicalmateriality in the built structures of the historical buildings: at Elmechouar-Tlemcen: a historical palimpsest complex. It conveys animage of several modifications, which gives a characteristic ofcomplex mutability. The technique gathers all the historical andtechnical documentation and allows later to visually note themodifications and the actions carried out. Each stratigraphic unitdefines a materiality relative to a masonry that characterizes thehistoric monument.The stratigraphic analysis succeeded in re-tracing thehistorical evolution of the complex, and identifying temporal layersdating from the 14th century to the present day. Résumé: Le zellige peut être conceptualisé scientifiquement comme une structure intégrée dans une composition qui implique à la fois des suppressions et des adjonctions de formes de base. Cette définition scientifique du zellige met en lumière sa nature complexe en tant que forme artistique qui combine à la fois des éléments géométriques et floraux dans une composition harmonieuse. On cherche par le présent travail d'analyser la syntaxe et la rhétorique des plans de calepinage du Zellige d'EL-Mechouar à Tlemcen, en premier lieu celui-ci correspond à un systémique architectural qui permis d'analyse la forme et la chromatique de la couleur ; ainsi, une seconde partie aura pour objectif d'examiner la composition du zellige à l'aide d'une grille de classification rhétorique (les figures de style de Pierre Guiraud). Ceci permettra d'entrevoir tous les traits significatifs de cette valeur esthétique du zellige du palais et la mosquée royale.
